Vivian Faye Mathews Kelley, 60, of Pine Bluff passed away Friday, June 17, 2011. She was born on June 17, 1951, in Fordyce, Arkansas, to the late Roy L. Mathews, Sr. and Mattie Beatrice Smith Mathews.
Vivian was educated in the Fordyce Public Schools. She earned a BA degree from AM&N College (now UAPB) in 1972 with a double major in sociology and history. In 1979, she earned a MSE in Social Studies from Henderson State University and a MEd in counseling from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1985.
She was an active member of Indiana Street Baptist Church where she served as assistant teacher of Class #3 and youth director.
Vivian was active in the Pine Bluff community. She was a life member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and NAACP. She held membership in the National Educational Association, Arkansas Educational Association, Arkansas Retired Teachers Association and UAPB/ AM&N Alumni Association. She also held membership in the Order of Eastern Star Loving Sisters Chapter #353, Phi Delta Kappa, the Fordyce Club of Little Rock, Arkansas Counseling Association, Arkansas Association for Multi-Cultural Counseling and Development, Jefferson County Democratic Women, and Southeast Arkansas Arts and Science Center. She was also an Arkansas funeral director and an officer with the Progressive Burial Association.
Vivian was a retired educator with the Watson Chapel School District. She loved reading, writing, working with children, traveling, shopping for her grand, Leslie Madelyn Peters, volunteering in the public schools, collecting for March of Dimes, making and keeping friends, and taking care of her family.
Vivian was preceded in death by an older sister, Ginger Mathews Sowell, and an older brother, Roy Lee “Duke” Mathews, Jr.
Vivian is survived by her husband, Marshall Kelley of Pine Bluff, a daughter, Marsha Chevonne Kelley Peters and her husband, Leslie L. Peters, of Pine Bluff, granddaughter, Leslie Madelyn Peters; and a special daughter, Soyini April Sanders Ward (Kevin) of St. Louis, MO. Vivian is also survived by three brothers: Dwight Golder Mathews of Detroit, Michigan, Leron Joe Mathews (Sharon) of Fordyce, Arkansas, Lamar Mathews of Little Rock, Arkansas; one sister, Linda Carolyn Brewer of Little Rock; three aunts: Jaton Smith of Camden, Arkansas, Gertha Mary Hargrow of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Emmesia Mathews Frost of Detroit; and her extended Kelley Family.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 24, 2011 at New St. Hurricane Baptist Church by Rev. L.K. Solomon. Burial will be in Forrest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Reflections of Life will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Indiana Street Baptist Church.
The family will be at the home of Marsha and Leslie Peters, 1105 Fairway Drive, Pine Bluff.
